Algarve re-elected "Best Beach Destination in Europe" in 2020
The Algarve was once again distinguished as the "Best Beach Destination in Europe" in the 2020 edition of the World Travel Awards. This is the seventh time (and sixth in a row) that the destination has won the preference of the leading leaders of the tourism and travel industry from around the world who, annually, participate in this initiative and vote to reward the best tourism offer globally.
In addition to the valuable history that allows the region to keep the record as a destination that most often won this award (in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2020), Turismo do Algarve considers that the distinction achieved this year takes on a special importance. "In a year as troubled as 2020, receiving this award and continuing to earn the trust of travelers around the world is a sign of confidence in the future. This distinction recognizes not only the quality of our beaches and our offer, but also shows that the Algarve remains a safe destination for holidays, with tranquility and complying with all the standards defined for the protection of public health", says João Fernandes, President of Tourism algarve.
It should be remembered that the Algarve was one of the first European regions to open the bathing season, ensuring all safety conditions. "Strengthening the security of the destination and regaining the confidence of tourists has been our priority since the beginning of the pandemic," explains João Fernandes. "There was a great mobilization and a joint effort of the whole region in this regard, which proved essential to consolidate this image of Best European Beach destination. Receiving this international distinction validates all this work and proves that the Algarve is able to adapt to the new circumstances, without adulterating the quality and authenticity of the experiences that can be experienced here by our tourists."
The beauty and diversity of the beaches of the Algarve, the year-round sun and the offer of conditions for the practice of various activities and sports related to the sea are some of the most valued characteristics by those who choose the Algarve beaches. These include other strong arguments such as the existence of 87 blue flag beaches; the signage of 48 beaches with the necessary accessibility for disabled people; the implementation of good environmental practices with regard to the cleanliness and preservation of these sites or the provision of a set of recognised quality infrastructure and support services.
It is based on the combination of all these attributes that the Algarve has been distinguished, over the last few years, as "Best Beach Destination in Europe". This is a position that has allowed Turismo do Algarve to capitalize on the bet it has been making, both in terms of the loyalty of priority strategic markets, as well as the diversification of other markets. "Together with all those who visit us to get to know our exceptional beaches, we then try to promote a rich and diverse offer – ranging from golf, nautical tourism and nature tourism, culture and gastronomy of the region.", reveals João Fernandes.
